The Halifax Highlanders aren’t a real hockey team as anyone who has seen the movie “Goon” this past weekend can attest. The sweater itself is ok with the logo looking like a ripoff of the Philadelphia Flyers complete with the ‘wings’ and ‘puck’ and the jersey pattern using a Boston Bruins template but with purple, orange and white for colors.
You can’t actually go out and buy this jersey yet however but that may change in time because “Goon” is actually a pretty good hockey movie. Maybe not Slapshot good but considering some of the tripe hockey fans have been handed over the last few years from films such as The Tooth Fairy and The Love Guru, it’s quite nice to see a hockey movie about… well… mainly hockey. For that reason it may not be uncommon to see fans wanting to get a hold of a Doug Glatt sweater much like fans now parade in Hansen brother jerseys.
It’s a fun – if not over the top – hockey movie that is certainly not for kids and which all hockey fans will appreciate while having just enough non-hockey humor in it that even non fans will enjoy.
Between this latest hockey flick and Kevin Smith’s proposed film based on the song “Hit Somebody” could it be possible we’re looking at a golden age of hockey films?
And if so, how soon will we see The Goon back in a WWE ring?
